Anosov’s mansion

The two-story mansion facing Sovetskaya Street draws attention by its similarity to the medieval castle. The building is designed in art nouveau style that was very popular in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. It is characterized by the asymmetry of shapes.

This house was built on the property belonging to merchant V.V. Anosov, of a family of the honorary Tambov citizens, the administrator of the Nativity Church Parish School.

According to the project, the building has a rectangular shape and an addition continuing into the yard. The upper part of the tower has small loophole windows and the tower itself is crowned with a hemispherical dome. The building façade to the right from the tower is symmetrical. The project of the house was certified by architect Fyodorovsky while the project author’s name remained unknown. The materials new to that time were used in the construction process: steel concrete and fabricated metals. The mansion was enclosed by the stone fence partly preserved to this day.

After the revolution, at the beginning of the 1920s the former merchant’s house accommodated the headquarters of the 27th separate battalion of All-Russian Extraordinary Commission. There the musical orchestra was organized where composer V.I. Agapkin worked as a bandmaster. From the middle of the 1950s the building was handed over to the regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Tambov police school was located here for a while and later – the technical office.

Today the building is used for the offices of various state structures.
